Our 'Forest' Garden

Having a garden and providing ‘forest school’ type activities provides learning in a different context for children. They can undertake a range of practical activities and carry out small achievable tasks. They can also develop their team working skills and learn to become more independent. Those who are unfamiliar with woodlands and green spaces can become confident in using them and this can form the basis of a life-long relationship with natural spaces.

The ‘natural' but safe environment of the forest garden ensures that children have the opportunities to assess risk and are encouraged to make sensible decisions about how to deal with unfamiliar and unpredictable situations (such as exploring or using tools to build shelters and dens). As the children gain confidence and improve their self-esteem this can impact on their emotional and mental well-being.

Our forest garden enables children to take more risks, be more active, be more independent in their own learning, think outside the ‘norm’, have more real life experiences and experience nature first hand.
